Obama’s Forgiveness of Gun Crimes Amid Push for Controls ‘Incredible Hypocrisy’

WASHINGTON TIMES — Richard Reid was already a two-time felon when authorities searched his Delaware apartment and found marijuana, crack cocaine divided into sales-size plastic bags, powder cocaine, a scale — and a loaded .32 caliber handgun, an unloaded .25 caliber pistol and ammunition for two other types of weapons.

Last week, President Obama commuted Reid’s 25-year sentence and made him one of the hundreds of drug users and dealers who the White House says have done enough time.

But at the same time, Mr. Obama forgave scores of gun crimes convictions for the offenders, raising thorny questions about whether the White House is serious about keeping guns out of “the wrong hands” — a refrain of the Obama administration in the wake of mass shootings.

Mr. Obama forgave six of Reid’s gun crimes, in addition to the drug trafficking and possession offenses for which he was convicted in 2007.

He is one of 107 federal inmates who have had gun crimes convictions pardoned or sentences commuted during this administration, including a number who used firearms while dealing drugs or who carried them despite having felonies on their records. Still others were caught lying to gun dealers or carrying weapons with the registration numbers filed off — suggesting an even deeper level of gun crime.

Texas Attorney General Says Professors Face Discipline if They Ban Guns

FOX — College professors in Texas could face disciplinary measures if they prohibit handguns to be brought into their classrooms, state Attorney General Ken Paxton said Monday.

Paxton filed a motion this week to dismiss a federal lawsuit brought last month by three professors at the University of Texas at Austin seeking to block the campus carry law, which took effect Aug.1.

Texas has allowed licensed concealed handguns in public since 1995 but had previously made college buildings off limits.

“Faculty members are aware that state law provides that guns can be carried on campus, and that the president has not made a rule excluding them from classrooms,” attorneys representing the university and Paxton wrote in the legal brief. “As a result, any individual professor who attempts to establish such prohibition is subject to discipline.”

According to the Dallas Morning News, the three professors – Mia Carter, Jennifer Glass and Lisa Moore – are asking a judge to put the law on hold arguing that the law is too vague for them to know if and how they might be punished if armed students are kept out of their classrooms.

The professors are asking a judge to halt the law for at least one semester in order to hold a public trial on whether the campus carry law violates their constitution rights to free speech and equal protection.

Paxton’s lawyers contend that the law is clear and gives the universities’ presidents the ability to designate each school’s limited gun-free zones. The lawyers go on to say that If classrooms aren’t expressly included in their campuses policy to prohibit handguns, then firearms must be allowed in the rooms.

Concealed-Carry Permit Surge Could Play Decisive Role in These 2016 Battleground States

DAILY SIGNAL — The number of concealed-carry permit holders has skyrocketed over the last four years, noticeably in key battleground states and among women, according to a new report.

Two swing states have the highest number of permit holders in the country, with 1.58 million in Florida and 1.2 million in Pennsylvania.

Meanwhile, 549,000 have permits in Ohio, another 556,136 in Michigan, and 530,092 in North Carolina. Indiana has issued 728,976 permits. These are all states that President Barack Obama—who supports gun control—carried at least once in his presidential election campaigns.

Fifteen percent of Indianans have concealed-carry permits. Pennsylvania has 12.2 percent of the population holding permits, and another swing state, Iowa, has 11.5 percent of the population carrying concealed-carry permits.

Depending on how significant guns are in the election, the increase in women permit holders and minorities could also be significant. Women have traditionally broken for Democrats in past elections.

“In eight states where we have data by gender, since 2012 the number of permits has increased by 161 percent for women and by 85 percent for men,” a report by the Crime Prevention Research Center says.

In Florida, women had 18 percent of permits in 2012. That rose to 24.1 percent in 2016. The rise went from 18 percent to 22.7 percent in Indiana from 2012 to 2015. In North Carolina, the number of permits for women went from 21.3 percent in 2012 to 27.5 percent in 2015. The study was based on the most recent available data for each state.

The increase among women with permits is even pronounced in the very blue state of Washington, the report said. Between 2005 and 2014, in Washington, “the growth rate for women getting new permits [was] twice as fast as that of men.”

“Women benefit more from having a gun than a man because of the large strength differential between a male-to-woman attacker compared to male-to-male attacker,” Crime Prevention Research Center President John Lott, a noted economist and researcher, told The Daily Signal in a phone interview. “Women with a gun would be able to better resist an attack from men. There has been a lot of fear about guns that have caused people to make the wrong decisions about guns, but that is changing.”

More Gun Control Embraced by Young Adults: Poll

WASHINGTON TIMES — CHICAGO (AP) — LaShun Roy supports a ban on semi-automatic weapons and more comprehensive background checks. But the 21-year-old gun owner from rural Texas doesn’t consider gun-control measures a top priority in this year’s elections.

For Keionna Cottrell, a 24-year-old who lives on Chicago’s South Side and whose brother was shot and killed this year in another Illinois city, few things are more important than limiting access to guns.

“So many people are dying here because there is no control of the weapons out on our streets,” said Cottrell. “Young men … have real military guns and they’re not scared to use them.”

Although their lives and experiences differ, the young women’s shared support for additional policies to curb gun violence reflects the feelings of many Americans between the ages of 18 and 30, regardless of their backgrounds, according to a new GenForward poll.

About 9 in 10 young adults say they support criminal background checks for all gun sales, a level of support that remains consistent across racial and ethnic groups. Stiffer penalties for violating existing gun laws are supported by 9 in 10 young adults, including about 9 in 10 whites, Asian-Americans and Latinos, as well as 8 in 10 African-Americans.

Fifty-seven percent of young Americans support a ban on rapid-firing semi-automatic weapons, with support especially high – 74 percent – among Asian-Americans, the poll found.

GenForward is a survey by the Black Youth Project at the University of Chicago with the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. The first-of-its-kind poll pays special attention to the voices of young adults of color, highlighting how race and ethnicity shape the opinions of a new generation.

Roy, a full-time college student who learned to handle assault rifles while serving in the National Guard, said it’s possible to protect the rights of gun owners and implement safeguards. That puts her among the 54 percent of young adults – including 61 percent of Asian-Americans, 57 percent of African-Americans and 52 percent of Latinos and whites – who say laws limiting gun ownership do not infringe on the public’s right to bear arms.

“I think it’s important to make sure the government isn’t going door to door saying, ‘Let me see your guns and ammo,’” said Roy, who is black. “But I think it’s really important to have background checks … and make sure a felon can’t get a gun.”

She also believes a new Texas law that permits the open carrying of guns on college campuses is a bad idea.

FBI: July Was 15th Straight Month of Record Background Checks

BREITBART — The latest figures from the FBI show that July 2016 was the 15th consecutive month of record background checks for gun sales.

The previous July record was set in 2015, when there were 1,600,832 background checks. But the FBI reports that July 2016 there were 2,197,169–an increase of nearly 600,000 checks.

The record breaking trend began in May 2015, when 1,580,980 checks set the record for the highest number of background checks performed in any May on record. Breitbart News reported that the record breaking pace then continued month after month, with June 2015 setting the record for the highest June on record, July 2015 for the highest July, August for the highest August, and so forth.

Then when May 2016 rolled around, the number of background checks performed beat the record from the year before. Checks did the same thing in June 2016 and now the FBI makes clear a new record was set in July 2016 as well.

On December 1, 2015, Breitbart News reported that the FBI performed an unprecedented 185,345 background checks on Black Friday alone. This was both a Black Friday background check record and a single-day background check record.

There have been a total of 16,026,660 background checks performed January 1 through July 31, 2016. But it is important to remember that these checks are performed on would-be gun purchasers, not on the guns. Each person may buy multiple firearms once passing a background check, so the number of guns sold at retail may be much higher than then number of background checks performed.

Morality and the Second Amendment

FOX NEWS — The most fundamental goal of any people—and of any government that is of, by, and for the people—must be to protect civilization.

Only in a state of civilization, in which personal and property rights are protected from the forces of the metaphorical jungle, can we truly be free.

For only then can we go to bed secure that, come morning, we’ll wake to find ourselves and our loved ones still safe, and the property we labored to acquire still there.

The problem confronting millions of Americans is that they do not live within the geographical borders of civilization. They are trapped in asphalt jungles, where crime is rampant and police response times are alarmingly long.

What are they to do? From a moral standpoint, if you are an adult mired in so sorry a condition, you have a duty to protect your loved ones who depend on you, including your spouse and children. You simply cannot abandon them to the forces of the jungle, no matter how ubiquitous they are.

Unless you can somehow uproot and move to a safe and civilized place, the answer for you likely is to own a firearm. Despite what you may hear or read to the contrary, guns save far more lives than they take.

The Latest Gun Owners Are the New ‘Silent Majority’

FOX — Gretchen Lager’s fondest childhood memories involved shooting bullets at tin cans and balloons along the Slippery Rock Creek in western Pennsylvania – but one day in 1995, guns became a far more menacing presence in her life.

Her brother-in-law killed his wife of 30 years – Lager’s sister – with a deer hunting rifle. He then turned the gun on himself in a murder-suicide that orphaned their 15-year-old daughter. For years afterwards, Lager was stridently anti-gun.

“I have been hating guns with everything I believe until lately,” she said.

But earlier this year, Lager recalled those more pleasant childhood memories, “and I thought, `there’s something about guns that I really know and love. There’s a mechanical beauty. There’s something fun about it.”‘

Lager, 64, who now lives in Hershey, purchased a .22-caliber pistol more than two months ago to rekindle her target shooting hobby and enrolled in a gun safety class at the Palmyra Sportsmen’s Association.

Still, she’s far from the stereotype of a gun owner, decked out in camouflage and stockpiling weapons while waiting for the apocalypse. Lager hates the National Rifle Association – “I think they are opportunists” – believes in mandatory training for people purchasing guns, and would never want to use her firearm to hurt an animal, much less a person. Instead, she considers herself part of a “silent majority” between two political extremes on guns.

Lebanon County residents are buying guns and obtaining permits to carry firearms with increasing frequency, according to data kept by the Pennsylvania State Police. Local gun stores said many of their first-time firearms owners are, like Lager, outside of the stereotypical gun-owning demographics: women, older couples, even 80-plus-year-old women and the disabled.

Four of Five Criminals Acquire Guns Illegally

BREITBART — A study conducted by the Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health shows that four out of five criminals acquire their guns illegally, while one out of five acquires them through legal means, prior to building up a criminal record.

The Washington Post published the study, which looked at guns recovered from Pittsburgh crime scenes in 2008 and found that “in approximately 8 out of 10 cases, the perpetrator was not a lawful gun owner but rather in illegal possession of a weapon that belonged to someone else.”

Roughly one out of five guns, 18 percent, were used in crimes by the people who actually purchased them. This latter group would consist of people with criminal intent but no criminal record to prevent them from passing a background check. Such people have legally acquired weapons, then killed innocents at Virginia Tech University (2007), Fort Hood (2009), Aurora movie theater (2012), DC Navy Yard (2013), Fort Hood (2014), Chattanooga (20105), Umpqua Community College (2015), Orlando (2016), among others.

In August 2015, the University of Chicago Crime Lab released a similar study that looked at criminal acquisition of firearms in Chicago. As with the Pittsburgh study, researchers found that criminals in Chicago get their guns in ways that are hardest to detect. According to the Chicago Sun Times, crime lab co-director Harold Pollack said, “Some of the pathways [regarding guns] people are concerned about don’t seem so dominant.” He also said very few individuals jailed on gun charges indicated using gun shows or the Internet to acquire firearms. Rather, they get the guns in undetectable ways on the street. Pollack added that the inmates know they run the risk of being caught by police but “were less concerned about getting caught by the cops than being put in the position of not having a gun to defend themselves and then getting shot.”

Obama Administration Releases Latest Executive Gun Control

DAILY CALLER — On Friday, July 22, just as members of his party were gathering in Philadelphia to coronate Hillary Clinton as their presidential nominee, the Obama Administration once again released a sweeping gun control measure by executive fiat. This time the bad news came via the U.S. State Department’s Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (DDTC), which is primarily responsible for administering the Arms Export Control Act (AECA) and its implementing rules, the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). The upshot is that DDTC is labeling commercial gunsmiths as “manufacturers” for performing relatively simple work such as threading a barrel or fabricating a small custom part for an older firearm. Under the AECA, “manufactures” are required to register with DDTC at significant expense or risk onerous criminal penalties.

As with prior executive actions on guns, the administration released its dictate suddenly and without advance warning to or prior input from affected businesses, completely bypassing the normal formalities associated with a significant rulemaking. The guidance is also likely to result in more confusion than clarity and may significantly chill heretofore legal conduct associated with gunsmithing.

By way of background, the AECA and ITAR concern rules by which military materiel is exported from, and imported to, the United States. The so-called “defense articles” governed by the AECA/ITAR are compiled in what is known as the U.S. Munitions List and include some, but not all, firearms and ammunition, as well as their parts and components. Thus, for purposes of the regime, a spring or floorplate from the magazine of a controlled firearm is subject to the same regulatory framework as the firearm itself.

Dem Delegate Admits: ‘Common Sense Gun Control’ Is Just Code for Repealing Second Amendment [VIDEO]

DAILY CALLER — The latest video from Project Veritas shows Mary Bayer, a former Democratic delegate and a volunteer organizer for Hillary Clinton’s campaign, admitting that the party is using “common sense” gun control to trick America into supporting a ban on all firearms and effectively repealing the Second Amendment.

“Oh, absolutely,” Bayer stated when asked by an undercover PV reporter — posing as a gun-control advocate — if she favored banning guns. “I’m totally against them, and my husband is against guns. My husband is now a registered Democrat.”

“You know how you do it?” Bayer posed. “You got to get Democrats in office… You got to get enough people in there to vote the right way.”

The PV journalist then told Bayer “well, we can’t say we want to ban guns. Can we do that? We got to hit that.”

“Right,” Bayer agreed. “You got to say you want ‘common sense gun legislation.’ … you say you want to ban guns altogether, that’s just going to piss everybody off.”

“You have to take that sort of moderate, ‘we just want to have common sense legislation so our children are safe!’ You say **** like that, and then people will buy into it.”

Additionally, Bayer responded, “for sure,” when asked if Hillary would support and press a full ban of firearms.

What Police Want From Concealed Carriers During a Traffic Stop

DAILY CALLER — If police pull over a person that is legally carrying a concealed firearm, what should such a person do? That’s a question that gets asked a lot. Many concealed carriers pride themselves on being law-abiding citizens, and given that they have a gun on them, how best to act when interacting with police is a good thing to know.

After all, police keep the rest of us safe. Police officers are also just like everyone else – they have anxieties, fears and just want to get home at the end of the day. Their own safety is just as important as everyone else’s.

And sure, there are plenty of articles out there that list off some very good ideas, mostly of what’s relatively common sense. However, it’s best to get advice straight from the horse’s mouth, so to speak. The following quotes are from real police officers, given to various news outlets around the nation, about what police want from concealed carrying citizens during a traffic stop or other interaction.

If pulled over, relax. Assistant Police Chief Michael Ward of the Bradford, Penn., Police Department told The Bradford Era that any motorist stopped by police should first relax and take a breath. Police officers don’t know what to expect from a traffic stop and are human, too. Captain Brent Allred of the Wichita Police told the Wichita Eagle that motorists should relax and be as forthcoming as possible. Nervous and twitchy people tend to make officers more nervous in turn.

Declare that you have a concealed carry license and a concealed pistol. Virginia State Trooper Alan Kelly told Britsol, Va., ABC affiliate WCYB that, “we do not like surprises” and to inform an officer of the permit.

Spokane, Wash., ABC affiliate KXLY quoted Chief Lee Bennett of the Airway Heights Police Department as saying it is best to “declare that you have a concealed pistol license and where the weapon is.” This same sentiment was echoed by the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, of Loudoun County, Va., from their Facebook page in the wake of the Philando Castile shooting. A similar view was echoed by Police Chief Scott Marchand of Pocatello, Idaho, in the Idaho State Journal after that state enacted its constitutional carry law.

It is also recommended to hand over your permit along with your driver’s license.

Clinton’s Co-Gun Grabber, Tim Kaine, on Gun Control

BREITBART — On July 22 Hillary Clinton announced Tim Kaine as her running mate. Kaine is a Democrat Senator from Virginia who supports a ban on 15-round “clips” and “assault weapons,” and who wants to enact a law to hold gun dealers liable for the misuse of firearms.

During the June 26 airing of Meet the Press, Kaine told Chuck Todd that he voted for an “assault weapons” ban before and “would likely vote for it again.” But he stressed that he believes “limitations on the size of magazines and ammunition clips” is the first step to take.

Todd asked Kaine if he believes the sale of AR-15 rifles ought to be illegal, and Kaine offered no direct answer, Instead, he suggested the problem with banning certain rifles is that the ban can be circumvented. Kaine said:

Here’s the thing, I have voted for [the assault weapons ban], and I would likely vote for it again, but here’s the practical problem I think you’re aware of. As soon as you define what an assault weapon is–that you can’t sell a weapon and here’s how to describe it–gun manufacturers just make one adjustment or two and they say, “See, this isn’t subject to the limitation.”

On September 8, 2015–just two weeks after Vester Lee Flanagan used a legally purchased firearm to kill news reporter Alison Parker on-air–Kaine put forward a bill to hold licensed gun dealers liable for the misuse of firearms. The bill was designed to “raise the bar” and require more “accountability” on the part of gun sellers. The Roanoke Times reported that Kaine’s bill “would make gun sellers criminally liable for a bad sale if they didn’t take reasonable, affirmative steps to determine the customer met federal criteria.”

Consider the scenario–Flanagan passed a federal background check for his gun. He passed the very same check that Hillary Clinton, Gabby Giffords, and others assure us will reduce crime and/or make us safer. But after passing the check and acquiring the gun, Flanagan carried out an evil deed. Background checks will never stop a latent criminal from getting a gun; they only stop actual criminals.

Yet even though the law was followed regarding Flanagan–a federal background check completed and passed–Kaine’s response was to push for more liability on the licensed gun dealer. In other words, he wants the gun dealer held responsible for what a buyer does after exiting the store with a firearm the FBI allowed him to purchase.

This is Hillary Clinton’s running mate.

‘Line Out the Door’ for AR-15s After Mass. AG Announces ‘Assault Weapons’ Ban

BREITBART — Massachusetts is seeing a run on AR-15s–including “a line out the door” at some guns stores–following state Attorney General Maura Healey’s (D) “directive” against “assault weapons” sales.

WCVB reports that Four Seasons gun shop in Woburn sent out an email as soon as it learned of Healey’s directive. The email said the store would not be able to sell AR-15s or other guns categorized as “assault weapons” after July 20. Bruce Sterling rushed to the gun store, saying, “It seemed like it made a lot of sense to come and get an AR-15 today.”

The gun store ended up with “a line out the door.”

On July 20 Breitbart News reported that Healey was sending a “directive” to all gun makers and sellers that “assault weapons” are not to be sold in her state.

According to The Boston Globe, Healey said Massachusetts already has an “assault weapons” ban which gun manufacturers and sellers have been going around by making cosmetic changes to firearms, thereby rendering them “state compliant.” She accused the “gun industry” of exploiting Massachusetts’ law by selling AR-15s “without a flash suppressor or folding or telescoping stock, for example,” and pointed out that these are “small tweaks that do nothing to limit the lethalness of the weapon.”

Ironically, Democrat-sponsored “assault weapons” bans are always based on the very kinds of cosmetic features cited by Healey. And gun rights proponents have consistently argued that banning guns because of such features is pure political opportunism.

Massachusetts AG Sneaks in New Gun Restrictions Banning AR-15

DAILY CALLER — This week the American political sphere is filled with news coming from the Republican National Convention and one state’s attorney general decided to use the RNC as a convenient distraction to sneak in new gun restrictions targeting Second Amendment rights.

In an article published at the Boston Globe, Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healy noted that, starting Wednesday, her office is “sending a directive to all gun manufacturers and dealers that makes clear that the sale of these copycat assault weapons is illegal in Massachusetts.”

A ban on “assault weapons” is already in place in Massachusetts, but manufacturers have been selling state-compliant guns without the superficial characteristics that make such weapons illegal in Massachusetts.

Healy wrote that any weapon with an “operating system…essentially the same as that of a banned weapon, or if the gun has components that are interchangeable with those of a banned weapon” will be considered illegal and will no longer be legally sold in the state.

In her letter, Healy described the AR-15 and similar “assault weapons” as “weapons used to commit mass murder,” that “have no business being in civilian hands” and “are not weapons of self-defense,” despite being used to save the lives of American firearms owners multiple times and being considered an excellent tool of self-defense.

The changes were decided not by state legislature but solely by the Attorney General; Healy does have the authority to make this decision herself.

Clinton Supreme Court Means ‘Your Right to Own a Firearm Is Gone’

THE HILL — Chris Cox, the executive director of the National Rifle Association’s Institute for Legislative Action, warned that gun ownership rights could be lost if Hillary Clinton wins the presidency, in an address to the Republican National Convention Tuesday night.

“It’s that simple, a Hillary Clinton Supreme Court means your right to own a firearm is gone,” said Cox.

In his speech, Cox said he wanted to discuss “a very personal freedom” with the crowd in Cleveland: “your right to protect your life.”

Cox warned that “we live in dangerous times” because “our government has failed to keep us safe.”

He posed a hypothetical situation in which a “violent predator” kicks in the door of a mother at home with her baby. “He’s a three-time loser who was released from prison early because some politician wanted to show their compassion. What’s she going to do? She’ll dial 911 and pray,” he said.

“So the question is, should she be able to defend herself with a firearm in her own home?” Cox asked. “That question is on the ballot this November.”

He warned that Supreme Court rulings protecting gun rights could be overturned if Clinton wins the White House race.

The Clinton campaign rushed out a email refuting the claim.

“Chris Cox just parroted Donald Trump’s false claim that Hillary Clinton wants to repeal the 2nd Amendment. This debunked claim couldn’t be farther from the truth,” the campaign said.

Cox also delivered a more personal jab at the presumptive Democratic nominee.

“What’s so outrageous is that for the rest of her life, Hillary Clinton will never even think about dialing 911. For the past 30 years, she hasn’t taken a walk, a nap or a bathroom break without a good guy with a gun there to protect her. So it’s easy for her to dismiss a right she will never have to use.”

Cox also sought to bolster the Trump campaign’s appeal with women, noting that American women are the fastest growing group of gun owners.

“Millions own firearms, millions, and millions more are thinking about it. It’s not Hillary Clinton who says women should have that choice, it’s Donald Trump.”

Justice Ginsburg Once Again Shares Her Intent to Overturn Heller

DAILY CALLER — This past week, Associate U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg gave a series of controversial interviews for which she has received nearly universal condemnation, even from the usually–fawning establishment press. Most of the headlines focused on Ginsburg’s derogatory statements regarding presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. However, just as important were comments signaling her intent to overturn the Supreme Court’s landmark decision in District of Columbia v. Heller, which held that the Second Amendment protects an individual right to keep and bear arms. Ginsburg signed onto Justice John Paul Stevens and Justice Stephen Breyer’s dissents in Heller and Breyer’s dissent in McDonald v. Chicago, which applied Heller’s protections to the actions of state and local governments.

The write-up of an interview Ginsburg gave to the New York Times contained the following:

[Ginsburg] mulled whether the court could revisit its 2013 decision in Shelby County v. Holder, which effectively struck down a key part of the Voting Rights Act. She said she did not see how that could be done.

The court’s 2008 decision in District of Columbia v. Heller, establishing an individual right to own guns, may be another matter, she said.

“I thought Heller was “a very bad decision,” she said, adding that a chance to reconsider it could arise whenever the court considers a challenge to a gun control law.

Curiously, the New York Times later significantly altered the part of their story pertaining to Ginsburg’s remarks on Heller, as pointed out by Jonathan Adler of the Volokh Conspiracy. The altered version removed the portion regarding Ginsburg’s contention that “a chance to reconsider [Heller] could arise whenever the court considers a challenge to a gun control law.” The Times eventually restored the missing portion of the story, but did not provide a satisfactory reason for the alteration.

MCCLATCHY DC — WASHINGTON — In February 2015, Philip Smith started a Facebook group to make space for the often-overlooked concerns of law-abiding, license-carrying gun owners who happen to be African-American.

Smith was tired of feeling conspicuous as the only black guy at the gun ranges he visited. Surely, he thought, there must be others out there, dealing with the same suspicions he faced when passersby glimpsed the Glock on his hip.

A year and a half later, Smith counts more than 11,000 members, representing all 50 states.

Smith’s forum reflects what researchers see as growing interest among African Americans in gun ownership. But becoming a black licensed gun owner is not a risk-free prospect, a fact brought to light this month by the police shooting of Philando Castile, who had a permit to carry a concealed weapon when he was shot in his car July 6, and by the presence at a Dallas rally of perhaps 30 marchers July 7 openly carrying their rifles. Dallas police mistakenly labeled a black licensed gun owner as a “person of interest” after gunman opened fire, killing five police officers.

Despite the championing in Congress of gun restrictions by black legislators, many African-Americans now see gun ownership as an important civil rights cause, in the spirit of abolitionist Frederick Douglass’ comment in 1867 that a man’s rights lay in three boxes: “the ballot box, the jury box and the cartridge box.” In African-American gun groups like Smith’s, members are expressing a mix of fear and defiance over the incidents.

Illinois Gun Restrictions Unfairly Target Foster Parents, Lawsuit Claims

FOX NEWS — Kenneth and Colleen Shults want to permanently welcome a foster child into their Fairmount, Ill., family, but claim in a federal suit filed this week they are being forced to surrender their Second Amendment rights to do it.

Already parents of three, the couple is in the process of formally adopting a daughter through the state foster care system and is fighting Department of Children and Family Services rules they say severely restrict their gun rights. The couple charges that the firearm restrictions aimed at safeguarding foster children violate their constitutional rights and threaten their ability to keep their family safe.

“Our family has always owned and used firearms,” said Kenneth Shults, 37, who is a firearms safety instructor and a machine shop manager. “No foster parent should have to forfeit their constitutional rights in order to be a foster parent.”

In Draft Party Platform, Democrats Regress on Gun Rights

DAILY CALLER — Following the lead of their presumptive presidential nominee, the Democratic Party is set to adopt a gun control plank in their 2016 party platform that lays bare the party leadership’s antipathy towards gun rights. The draft 2016 plank marks a significant shift in the party’s approach to the issue. Out is the lip service paid to the Second Amendment contained in the last several party platforms; the 2016 version is a forthright list of restrictive policies and an inflammatory tone common to the Democratic Party platforms of the 1990s.

Released July 1, the gun control plank of the draft 2016 Democratic Party Platform reads:

Gun Violence Prevention

With 33,000 Americans dying every year, Democrats believe that we must finally take sensible action to address gun violence. While gun ownership is part of the fabric of many communities, too many families in America have suffered from gun violence. We can respect the rights of responsible gun owners while keeping our communities safe. We will expand background checks and close dangerous loopholes in our current laws, hold irresponsible dealers and manufacturers accountable, keep weapons of war—such as assault weapons—off our streets, and ensure guns do not fall into the hands of terrorists, domestic abusers, other violent criminals, and those with severe mental health issues.

Notice that the plank does not mention the Second Amendment, or recognize the fact that it protects an individual right to keep and bear arms. This is a marked departure from the 2012 Democratic Party Platform, which held:

Actor Wil Wheaton Blames Courthouse Shooting on NRA; Inmate Stole Deputy’s Gun

WASHINGTON TIMES — Actor Wil Wheaton confused and angered a number of his fans Monday when he blamed a courthouse shooting on the National Rifle Association.

Three people died and one person was injured in St. Joseph, Michigan, Monday when a criminal at Berrien County Courthouse stole a deputy’s handgun and began firing.

Mr. Wheaton, perhaps best known for his work on the movie “Stand by Me” and the “Star Trek: The Next Generation” television series, posted a profanity-laced tweet as news broke.

“Welcome to America. It has been 0 days since our last mass shooting. #F**ktheNRA,” the actor wrote.

Witnesses said an inmate who was on his way to jail managed to steal the officer’s weapon, a local ABC affiliate reported. The shooter was killed on the scene.
